Evan Sankey is a professional trombonist and music educator from Austin, Texas, and serves as Assistant Professor of Trombone and Euphonium at Texas Lutheran University. He holds a D.M.A. degree from the University of Texas at Austin, and M.M. and B.M. degrees from the University of North Texas.
In addition to his current role at TLU, Dr. Sankey served as the graduate teaching assistant for the trombone studio at UT Austin and has been a faculty member for the Longhorn Music Camp.
As a solo performer, Dr. Sankey was named winner of the Big 12 Yamaha Xeno Tenor Trombone competition, finalist in the National Solo Competition Division III, and was a finalist for three consecutive years in the Larry Wiehe International Trombone Competition (a competition devoted to the legacy of Arthur Pryor), performing Pryor’s works at the International Trombone Festival in Austin, TX, Nashville, TN, and Paris, France. He has been a featured soloist performing Pryor’s Love’s Enchantment with the San Jacinto College Central Brass Band and Annie Laurie and Fantastic Polka with the Austin Symphonic Band. Dr. Sankey was named a winner of the UNT Concerto Competition and performed the 1st movement of Concerto pour Trombone et Orchestre by Henri Tomasi with the UNT Symphony Orchestra.
Additionally, Dr. Sankey is an active chamber musician, performing with the University of Texas Trombone Choir in the Texas Music Educators Association Convention (2015), the International Trombone Festival (2015, 2017), and in various churches in the Austin area. Dr. Sankey is a founding member of Prismatx, a group of musicians dedicated to multimedia performances blending contemporary music with visual art, and was a recipient of the 2017 Richard E. Rainwater Grant for American Music. He is also a member of the Lone Star Brass Orchestra, and has performed with the Lawton Philharmonic Orchestra, Round Rock Symphony Orchestra and the Central Texas Master Singers. Most recently, Dr. Sankey performed a quartet recital with his students at the 2018 Big XII Trombone Conference in Lubbock, TX.
Dr. Sankey has had the opportunity to collaborate with world-renowned trombonists including the Maniacal 4, Jeremy Wilson, Joseph Alessi, David Garcia, Zachary Bond, Brian Hecht, Jon Blondell, Brett Baker, James Markey, and Alex Iles, and has recorded with the University of North Texas Wind Symphony and Symphony Orchestra on the Jeanne Inc., GIA, and Klavier labels. Past teachers of Dr. Sankey include Dr. Vern Kagarice, Jan Kagarice, Tony Baker, and Dr. Nathaniel Brickens. Evan Sankey is a Shires Performing Artist and proudly plays Shires trombones.
Evan lives in Austin, TX with his supportive wife Jessica, their precious daughter Aria, and their dog Maple.
